'Flagship' homes plan next to city park axed

CONTROVERSIAL plans by the city council to build new homes right next to a Derby park have been axed following a backlash from residents.

Derby City Council says its “flagship” project to build 10 new homes next to Arboretum Park on Rose Hill Street at the site of a former bowling green is now “closed and will no longer be reported on”.

It follows a significant backlash against the council-led proposals from nearby residents.

More than 40 objections were submitted during the planning application stage.

Planning documents stated that seven two-storey terraced homes and three bungalows would be built on the plot of land facing the residential street next to the historic park, which opened in 1840.

Each house would have had at least three bedrooms and two parking spaces.

The council said at the time the plans were part of a “flagship” social housing project.
