HOSPITAL ADMITS ‘IN ALL PROBABILITY’ SHE WOULD HAVE MADE A FULL RECOVERY HAD SHE RECEIVED PROPER CARE

- By SOPHIE FAGONE BUSCIMESE

THE family of a mum who died less than a day after being sent away from A&E are pushing for answers into how her death was allowed to happen.

Tanya McCartney went to Chesterfield Royal Infirmary after her GP referred her to A&E due to “concerning” symptoms, which included a high temperature, shortness of breath and a painful throat.

After Tanya, 25, was assessed by doctors, they discharged her with antibiotics.

The following day, May 19, 2023, Tanya was found dead at home, leaving behind her 11-month-old son Marcus, who is now being raised by his grandmother, Tanya's mum Natasha.

“He keeps me going,” said Natasha. “Marcus is now three years old and has no memory of his mother, we try to keep photos around and visit the grave but he has to grow up without his mum”

Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust initially claimed that discharging Tanya had been appropriate, while an inquest determined pneumonia as the cause of death.

Natasha, however, pushed for more answers, leading the trust to reopen the investigation.

The trust subsequently recognised that if Tanya had been admitted to hospital to receive antibiotics intravenously, she “would have, in all probability, made a recovery’.

Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust said it acknowledged “that the care she received was not the standard that it strived for".
