Explosion described as 'terrifying beyond belief' as homes were rocked

POLICE and fire crews are scaling back their response following a suspected gas explosion in a Derby street.

The “earthquake-like” bang rocked the local community and could be heard up to a mile away - with one resident saying they had “never heard anything like it before”.

Emergency services have been at the scene in Eden Street, Alvaston, since the call was first received at around 7.24pm on Tuesday evening.

Firefighters, gas engineers, police and other officials are expected to remain on-site over the coming days following the incident, which left one terraced property severely damaged and several others impacted.

One man was taken to hospital with serious injuries and one dog was also rescued by urban search and rescue teams and handed into the care of a veterinary team.

The Health and Safety Executive has also been informed of the incident and is working in partnership with emergency services.
