1. The Plain English Campaign headquarters are on Union Road, where it has conducted an important international business for over 30 years.

2. The Peak Forest Canal is now only used for recreation and has a busy marina at Newtown. However, the railway service between Buxton and Manchester continues to operate. On the other side of the gorge, New Mills station serves the Hope Valley. It provides a regular service between Manchester and Sheffield.
3. One railway line, New Mills, lost in 1970, was to Hayfield, along the Sett Valley. It is now a two-and-a-half-mile trail popular with walkers, cyclists and horse riders.
