CELTIC LEGEND WRITES EXCLUSIVELY FOR YOU EVERY WEEK
-
I'M GER-MAN Shaun Maloney scores against Stuttgart on the way to Seville in 2003
MARTIN O'NEILL in the dugout and a Euro tie against Stuttgart. It's easy to see why some Celtic fans might be getting excited about the prospect of another adventure on the continent.
But unless O'Neill gets proper backing in the final days of the window, he's going to struggle in Scotland, let alone in the Europa League.
Celtic have brought in a couple of loans in January with Julian Araujo and Tomas Cvancara checking in.
The pair have shown positive signs, but I genuinely believe O'Neill could do with another FOUR coming in to have a proper shot at the Premiership title and a decent tilt at Europe.
Getting out of the group stage is commendable, especially given all the nonsense around Celtic this season.
O'Neill has worked wonders and having lost at home to Braga and Roma under Brendan Rodgers and Wilfried Nancy, not many would have put money on this scenario unfolding.
Now he's got the side into the knockouts, I'm not necessarily sure it's a good thing.
Let's be honest here, Celtic are NOT going to win the Europa League. This squad doesn't look equipped.
Stuttgart are a decent outfit in the Bundesliga although they shouldn't be feared.
But the likes of Aston Villa, Roma, Lyon and Porto are still in there and will be too strong.
Getting into the draw has people talking about 2003 and Seville but there are no parallels with that memorable campaign.
Back then we had a strong squad, momentum and motivation to fight on all fronts.
