Record number of rapes reported but conviction rate lowest of any offence, Call for boys and men to be given tools to identify and challenge misogyny

- BY NORMAN SILVESTER

SCOTLAND'S justice system has been accused of "failing women" following a massive increase in sex crimes in the last 12 months.

Shock figures show there were 3004 reports of rape and attempted rape between June 2024 and June 2025-a 15 per cent increase on the previous year and 21 per cent higher than in 2021.

Sexual assaults rose three per cent to 5108 cases, and were 11 per cent higher than four years ago.

Overall, the numbers of sex crimes across Scotland were up five per cent to 15,129 – 41 a day - and nine per cent more than 2021.

The Scottish Government figures, published yesterday, also show domestic abuse cases rocketed by 26 per cent to 2742 and were 63 per cent up on 2021's figures.

Scottish Labour Justice spokeswoman Pauline McNeill said: "Under the SNP, things are moving in the wrong direction and women are being failed.

"Crime is on the rise and violence against women is at crisis point.

"This shameful rise in domestic abuse and sexual violence shows the SNP has failed to do enough to tackle the attitudes of boys and men which is fundamental to changing these worrying trends.

"Police Scotland is stretched to breaking point and our communities have been made less safe."
