Trans people 'feeling more vulnerable' after court ruling
Daily Post
|September 25, 2025
TRANS people in North Wales are feeling vulnerable after a Supreme Court ruling, a policing panel has been told.
In April this year, the UK Supreme Court determined that sex referred to biological sex at birth when considering the 2010 Equality Act.
Trans people are protected legally from both harassment and discrimination, however the ruling has raised questions around issues such as shared single-sex spaces.
The issue was discussed during a meeting of the North Wales Police and Crime Panel, which also heard there had been a rise in recorded hate crime regionally.
Speaking at this week's meeting at Conwy's Coed Pella HQ, panel member Cllr Steve Copple briefed the committee on how the ruling had made trans people feel "vulnerable".
The briefing was given during a section of the meeting reserved for feedback from the panel's member champions.
The briefing was given within the context of a report presented at the meeting stating that hate crime had increased by 4.3% in North Wales this year, with 1,168 incidents reported in the last year, up from 1,026 cases; 64% of the cases were racial.
