Timing of roadworks sparks island debate

A COUNCIL has launched its annual road surface ‘dressing programme’ - sparking a debate over its timing.

Surface dressing is a road maintenance technique where a bitumen binder is sprayed onto the road surface followed by a layer of stone chippings.

These are then rolled in to create a new surface that improves the grip (skid resistance) and seals the road surface from water.

The work can be done fairly quickly but it will mean some temporary traffic controls on some A and B roads and potential closures of smaller roads.

Once laid there will be a lower speed limit due to the skid and chippings risk. It extends the life of the road by up to 10 to 15 years.

But the timing has divided opinion. Anglesey is a popular holiday destination with millions of visitors every year.

The peak time is the six week school holidays with the island packed with tourists.
