Speed fine blitz on 20mph roads as holidaymakers packed North Wales routes

DRIVERS faced a speeding fine blitz last month as the numbers caught out on 20mph roads spiked. Wales introduced the 20mph default limit back in September 2023.

There was a six month 'grace' period on enforcement with police in North Wales focusing on education rather than fines and penalty points.

This changed last spring when enforcement was stepped up - leading to a large rise in the number of speeding tickets handed out.

There were just over 25,000 speeding offences on 20mph and 30mph roads in 2023 across North Wales. But this had increased to just under 57,000 in 2024. The number of fines handed out peaked in August when almost 8,000 tickets were issued - up from 892 in June.
