Plans for new estate aim to tackle 'affordability stress'

RISING property prices and an aging population have influenced the design of a new housing estate on Anglesey.

A total of 52 affordable homes are planned on the outskirts of Amlwch, of which a significant number are for one person only.

Demographic trends on the island, coupled with unaffordable housing, are pushing up demand for social and rented property on the island. As the population ages and younger people move away, the need for cheaper housing is growing - especially for single people.

At the last UK census in 2021, the median age on Anglesey rose from 45 to 48 years - lower than Conwy (49 years) but higher than the Welsh average (42 years). The number of people aged 65-74 increased by about 1,200 (14.2%21).

At the same time, the 35-49 age group dropped by around 2,300 (17.2%). The result is an aging population often living on their own. Anglesey Council has warned this may put a future strain on local services such a healthcare.
