REPLACEMENT BUILDING COULD COST £66MILLION

- By DALE SPRIDGEON Local Democracy Reporter

THE majority of people who responded to a consultation over the future of a crumbling Holyhead high school favoured relocating to a newly built school.

The ageing Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi was one of the first in Wales blighted during the RAAC concrete crisis, in 2023, and needs extensive maintenance to keep it running.

Anglesey County Council has consid ered options, which included rebuilding the old school on its existing site or relocating pupils to a newly built school at an estimated cost of £66m.

Following a statutory consultation a report concluded “that the most appro priate response is to build a new school building”.

The favoured site was on land near to the Holyhead Leisure Centre - dependent on land acquisition.

The statutory consultation over “the proposal to relocate Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi learners to a new school building for 11 to 18-year-olds” was held between June 5, 2025 to July 17, 2025.

A total of 1,023 responses were given, including 429 (42%) local residents, 329, (32.3%) learner/pupils and 229 (22.5%) parent/guardians.

Some 79% agreed with the proposal and 21% disagreed.

Around half who disagreed had indicated that the proposed site near the leisure centre was “too far from the current site and the town centre”.
