A MAN assaulted nine people, including five police officers, in a string of assaults committed across Wales. He also hurled racial and sexual slurs at the officers.

Matthew Williams first targeted his then partner in Penrhyndeudraeth in Gwynedd and had to be Captor sprayed by police. Then while on bail he launched more attacks on police officers in South Wales.

A judge at Caernarfon Crown Court yesterday heard he had already served a period on remand in custody. She sentenced Williams, 34, who was in HMP Berwyn in Wrexham, to a total of 24 months for a string of offences, but suspended them for 24 months.

He was ordered to do rehabilitation work or face going to prison immediately.

Prosecutor Simon Parry said Williams had been in a relationship with a woman in Gwynedd. They had gone for a walk when the defendant drank Stella lager, the court heard.

They returned home but argued. At 9pm that evening, February 10, the defendant went to the Royal Oak pub in Penrhyndeudraeth.

The woman went to bed but woke up to find the defendant "in her face". Later he told her to get downstairs where he punched her face and pinned her on a sofa.

She ran outside but Williams followed and put her in a headlock. Soon afterwards she shouted for help and Williams drove off in his white Toyota.
