What next for homes left abandoned in Rhyl?

Abandoned council estate left to decay

BACK in the 1970s the council built the estate of Maes Emlyn in Rhyl with the 59 homes providing sheltered housing for residents. It was named after Emlyn Williams, who had served as chairman of the Housing Committee of Rhyl for nearly 20 years up to 1965.

Sadly they were not built to last and were declared not fit for purpose in recent years. All the residents were moved out in August 2021 and the estate abandoned.

Since then the estate has stood empty and the condition of the flats has continued to deteriorate as the elements take their toll. A recent video by Adam Mark Explores showed the current state of the development.

There is likely no hope of saving them and at some point demolition looms. But when this will happen is another question.

At one point Denbighshire County Council proposed temporary homeless accommodation at the estate. This idea though was shot down by nearby residents and eventually the plan like the homes - was abandoned.
