Verulam Sporting's ballies turn on the style against Phoenix Legends

ON A WEEKEND that coincided with the Diwali celebrations, the Verulam Recreation Grounds provided its own display of fireworks - courtesy of Verulam Sporting's explosive performance in a commanding 4-0 victory over Phoenix Legends in the Ethekwini Masters Over 50s League.
Facing an inform, title-chasing Sporting side at this stage of the season was always going to be a daunting task for a handicapped Phoenix Legends, and from the opening whistle, it was clear that it would be a long afternoon for the visitors.
The return of Njinga Mathebula to the heart of midfield after his injury layoff added a creative spark that had been sorely missed. Linking up seamlessly with Thulani Goqo, Tsepo Ntsoane, and Lungelo "Nyamfu" Zulu, Mathebula helped Sporting take immediate control, leaving Phoenix scrambling to keep shape.
It took just five minutes for the home side to find the breakthrough. After sustained pressure, a free-kick earned on the edge of the box was floated in beautifully by Prince Mtshali. The ball bounced dangerously in the area, which fell kindly for Roland Sooban, who reacted quickest slotting home from close range to make it 1-0.
