Restore the honour of the police badge

SOUTH Africans are no strangers to the shadow of corruption, but each new allegation within our police service strikes a fresh blow to public confidence. The recent claims by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi about political interference and manipulation expose just how deeply the problem has taken root.

These are not the first accusations of their kind. For more than two decades, the lines between politics and policing have blurred, leaving the SAPS weakened and the public disillusioned. When officers are beholden to political masters instead of the law, communities are left vulnerable and justice is compromised.
