Cops liable for school shooting

A PROTEST at a school by a group of pupils who protested during morning assembly about the state of decay the school was in, led to one of the students being shot by the police, which in turn led to damages claim against the SAPS.

Siphelele Totseka instituted an action against the Minister of Police in the Eastern Cape High Court, claiming damages for the assault.

He testified that he was a Grade 10 learner at Madala Senior Secondary School in 2019. At the time, the pupils were assembled for prayer as per his school schedule. Instead of singing the usual gospel songs, he, and other learners, began a protest about the school' dilapidated infrastructure.
