Bookings of deals on rise amid craving for hols of a simpler time

- BY SUE LEE and HANNAH BRITT

With their offer of sun, sea and sand, not to mention exotic new discoveries such as bidets, olive oil and garlic, package deals were beloved by British holidaymakers in the 1970s and 80s.

While many remained faithful, when the internet brought the ability to book separate flights and hotels lots of travellers were tempted to cheat.

But the extra hassle of DIY trips, plus problems with bookings and lack of financial protection - especially during Covid - means sunseekers are returning in droves to package breaks.

Travel agent Richard Slater, of Macclesfield-based Henbury Travel, says business has risen fivefold since the pandemic, with 95% being packages.

He says: "The internet came along and all the holidaymakers had a dabble with that, booking their own flights and accommodation, and they got their fingers burnt or found it too complicated and returned to booking package holidays. I think we've come full circle."
