Millions urged to look for winter energy deal

MILLIONS of households are being urged to switch energy deals amid a winter price hike.

Regulator Ofgem's price cap will rise 2% today, taking the typical gas and electricity bill to £1,755 a year.

As temperatures fall, customers will use more energy at the higher rate. But experts say 34 million customers on a standard variable tariff - those hit by the cap - could save by switching to a fixed deal.

MoneySuperMarket says the average customer could save up to £271 by doing so, with the cheapest deals ranging from £1,429 to £1,643.
