Protests at Trump's state visit. PM hopes for US trade boost
IT will be pomp and pageantry all the way today for a president who revels in adulation - but Donald Trump also faces the fury of Britons opposed to his visit.
Keir Starmer last night rolled out the red carpet for a figure who seems to thrive on whipping up tensions, lying and abusing opponents and journalists who dare to question him.
And while the PM hopes the two-day state visit will help secure UK-US trade agreements, Trump's arrival sparked anger among those who feel his brand of divisive politics should not be welcomed here.
The President touched down at 9.10pm, after gushing about his invite to stay at Windsor Castle tonight.Around 50 Stop Trump Coalition members last night gathered outside the royal residence, where he will be guest of honour at a state banquet tonight, to protest his arrival.
One, Pam Chadwick, 69, said: "He can spin this as much as he wants with all the photographs and the flags, but we don't want him here. He is a dangerous man. He's a maniac."
