Authorities believe the two who died, along with another 11 who fell ill, had all been in the same nightclub 10 days ago.

Queues as long as 400 yards formed on the campus of Kent University in Canterbury, which cancelled exams as many students chose to head home.

One of the victims, a 21-year-old university student, has not been named, while the other was named as Juliette, a sixth-form pupil at a school in nearby Faversham. Her father told the BBC the family "are beyond devastated and they have no words to express their loss".

Amelia McIlroy, head of Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, said: "It is with great sadness that we are confirming the loss of Juliette.

"She was incredibly kind, thoughtful and intelligent and she loved our school.

"Juliette embraced everything that school had to offer with great enthusiasm and joy and her humour and positivity were captivating.

"In short, she was a lovely girl - her beautiful smile, her loving nature and her sense of fun will be hugely missed. We are all devastated."

One of those taken ill is reported to be in an induced coma, while local burger bar server Casey Marlow, 19, was photographed in a hospital bed as she battled to overcome her illness. Casey's mum Emma said: "You just don't think something like this will happen to you or one of your family."
