Shamed Amesbury gets 10 weeks

SUSPENDED Labour MP Mike Amesbury was yesterday jailed for 10 weeks for punching a constituent after a boozy night out.

The disgraced 55-year-old, who has been sitting as an Independent since his arrest last year, had pleaded guilty to assaulting 45-year-old Paul Fellows.

Amesbury faced calls to quit as an MP and could lose his Runcorn and Helsby seat won at the general election.

If he fails in any appeal he will be liable for a recall, which would trigger a by-election if 10% of registered voters in his constituency call for it.

Amesbury was jailed at Chester magistrates court over the attack in Frodsham, Cheshire, last October.
