Italian fashion designer Valentino dies aged 93

The fashion world is in mourning after legendary Italian designer Valentino died yesterday at the age of 93.

A statement from his foundation said he was surrounded by family in Rome and will now lie in state at its headquarters tomorrow and Thursday until his funeral in the capital on Friday.

The statement added: "Valentino Garavani was not only a constant guide and inspiration for all of us, but a true source of light, creativity and vision.

The designer, known for his statement Valentino Red shade, shaped high fashion in the late 20th century after starting his brand in 1960.

Universally known by his first name, Valentino was adored by generations of royals, first ladies and movie stars, including Diana, Princess of Wales, Julia.

Roberts, Oprah Winfrey and Naomi Campbell.

He also created the wedding dresses for both Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Elizabeth Taylor.

More recently, his designs have been worn by the likes of Zendaya and Carey Mulligan.
