Brit suspected of crystal meth running

- CHRISTOPHER BUCKTIN

THE British pensioner suspected of being an international drug smuggler in Chile is William "Billy Boy" Eastment, a bowls and fishing enthusiast from a quiet village.

He was held with an alleged £200,000 of crystal meth in his suitcase on a flight from Cancun in Mexico on May 18. The 79-year-old is now facing up to 15 years in jail if found guilty.

His arrest has stunned those who know him in Milborne Port, Somerset, where he lives in a semi-detached housing association bungalow on a cul-de-sac.

But his former partner, who has not seen him since 2017, claims he had a darker side. She said: "People around here won't know him very well because they knew he was trouble.

"He had a hell of a temper and was always falling out with people.

"So neighbours would nod and say hello, but otherwise didn't get involved.

SIMPLE

"He is a nasty piece of work, and thinking of him is very frightening Eastment's home is provided for the elderly and offers social activities such as coffee mornings and Tai Chi.

But he has swapped his village life for a cell at the notorious 1 Penitentiary jail in the Chilean capital Santiago, where he is now awaiting trial.
