Mendis was Litigation Director at the SEC prior to being appointed as Director General in 2019.

Sources opined that Mendis may go to courts that due process was not followed and was removed sans an investigation.
Others claimed that the SEC Commissioners had enough grounds to suspend or remove the DG whilst some alleged that suspension or removal of Mendis was considered under the previous Board of Commissioners too.
More recently Mendis figured in the controversy over the nondisclosure of relationship between him and CEO-designate of the Colombo Stock Exchange Vindhya Jayasekera.
