'Victims of crime are petrified that dangerous inmates are unsupervised'

‘This will alarm victims of crime as many are already petrified that dangerous inmates are left unsupervised - free to terrorise and inflict more misery. It is claimed the Ministry of Justice has shifted pressure from an “overstretched Prison Service on to an equally over stretched Probation Service”.

Dame Anne confirmed the Probation Service was already reducing supervision in more than 40,000 cases. This meant prolific offenders who are most likely to be recalled to prison were not being monitored as much.

And, addressing Labour’s plans, Dame Anne said: “Those challenges will be even greater if the proposals of the Independent Sentencing Review are accepted.
