UK raises steaks to be lab-grown meat superpower

SCIENTISTS have announced a £38million mission to harness replacement protein sources such as lab-grown meat, insects, soy and peas.

The National Alternative Protein Innovation Centre aims to make the UK "the global superpower" in the field.

Experts hope to speed up the drive to cut greenhouse gas emissions by exploring how more plant-based protein sources can be integrated into our diets.

Food accounts for 26% of global emissions, with animal farming making up 82% of the total from agriculture.

UK Research and Innovation food sector champion Professor Guy Poppy said: "If we swapped a standard beef steak to a standard portion of oily fish in this case, salmon we could reduce greenhouse gases by 22%.
