Landlords fear tougher times ahead

- BY ANDREW PAPWORTH

IT might be closing time for many pubs but one seaside town is refusing to call last orders, despite huge financial pressure.

With watering holes shutting at a rate of eight a week nationally, Great Yarmouth is bucking the trend, with more pubs per person than any other town.

Research by Best New Bingo Sites found the tourist destination has 242 drinking establishments per 100,000 residents - an impressive achievement, considering about a third of pubs have vanished nationwide in 25 years.

The coastal resort has faced its own economic tidal waves, with a slump in traditional industries such as fishing, alongside the closure of many high street shops. But the Norfolk town's packed bars and taverns show people still support their locals.

Konrad Beutler, vice-chairman of East Norfolk Campaign for Real Ale, confirmed there is a thriving pub scene in Yarmouth, helped by low pint prices.

He said: "The pub trade is good. The tourist trade is very good year-round. It's very reasonable to drink here. There is very competitive pricing."
