FEARS that Britain will lack the cash to invest in new military equipment or help boost armed forces retention and recruitment are laid bare in a hard-hitting report.

The soaring cost of our nuclear deterrent may squeeze budgets for other needs such as improvements to shoddy military housing, according to the Public Accounts Commitee.

Its report out today says the forecast costs for the nuclear programme for the decade from 2023-24 onwards have increased by £10billion to approximately £128billion.
