IT MAY seem puzzling now, but the Daily Express was crossword-free for more than two decades after it launched 125 years ago.

That changed on December 11, 1924 when a crossword appeared in a Selfridges ad, causing a stir.

Readers loved the innovation so much that eccentric columnist JB Morton, who used the pseudonym Beachcomber, was driven to set his own after eating humble pie for having mocked the brainteasers.
