My bumpy arms and thighs are getting me down in summer

The skin on my arms and thighs is really rough and dry, with what look like small goosebumps. It’s been like this for years, ever since I was a teenager I think. I've tried scrubbing at it and applying a moisturiser, but if there is any effect, it doesn’t last very long. I'm really conscious of it at this time of year, when my arms and legs are not covered by clothing. Is there anything else I can do about?

I suspect you have keratosis pilaris, a skin condition where hair follicles become blocked with keratin, a hard protein that is found in skin that helps protect it from injury and infection.

Why this happens isn't known, but it's a common condition that often starts in childhood or adolescence, which can run in families, and also tends to occur more in people with very dry skin or eczema.
