'I was just there...modest D-Day hero's top-secret 100th birthday surprise

A MODEST veteran of the D-Day landings had his 100th birthday marked by a top secret visit from military chiefs.
Lt Richard Willis was second in command of a Navy landing craft taking US troops and tanks to Utah beach in Normandy as part of Operation Overlord in June 1944.
He was wounded in the leg by shrapnel during the invasion and years later was awarded the Legion d'Honneur by France.
Richard was joined by his family for his big day at Nynehead Court Care Home, near Wellington, Somerset, where he now lives.
