A SPITFIRE dips its wings in a touching tribute over the funeral of RAF legend George Dunn.

High-flying farewell to RAF legend, 103

The iconic fighter’s flypast bade farewell to the holder of the Distinguished Flying Cross for valour and the Legion d’Honneur.

Flt Lt Dunn, who flew with Bomber Command in the Second World War, died last month at 103 and was buried near his home in Saltdean, East Sussex, yesterday.

Among mourners watching the Spitfire, decked in D-Day invasion stripes, was his sister Joyce, 93.

The airman had played down his wartime service, once saying: “I was no one special. I just did what I could and was very lucky.”

George was just 17 when he defied a life-threatening lung condition to join up, first working as a wireless operator/air gunner before pilot training in Canada. He completed 44 bombing raids on Nazi Germany: 30 piloting Halifax bombers, the rest flying Mosquitos.
