France gives honour to 100-year-old D-Day hero

A D-DAY veteran wept with emotion as he received France's highest military honour at the age of 100.

John Fiddler was presented with the Legion D'Honneur at HMS Cambria in Cardiff yesterday in recognition of his service during the Second World War.

Mr Fiddler, who served in the Royal Navy, was just 19 when he delivered tanks and troops to the beaches of Normandy on D-Day.

He said he was "delighted" to receive the medal and described it as "a great honour indeed".

The Legion d'Honneur was established by Napoleon in 1802 and is France's highest decoration.

Duty

The French government decided in 2014 that it would recognise all D-Day veterans with the honour in recognition of their efforts to liberate France on June 6, 1944.
