Medical breakthrough gives hope to thousands as couple hail 'greatest gift we could have asked for"

FIRST BABY BORN IN UK TO WOMB TRANSPLANT MOTHER

MEET Amy Davidson the first UK baby born to a mother who had a womb transplant, in a breakthrough that will give hope to thousands of women.

Delighted parents Grace and Angus Davidson called her "the greatest gift we could ever have asked for".

New mum Grace, 36, added: "The moment we saw her was incredible, and both of us just broke down in emotional tears."

Amy was named after her aunt who donated her uterus to her sister in Britain's first such transplant, in February 2023. Her middle name Isabel honours one of the surgeons in the pioneering procedure.

Grace grew up without a womb due to Mayer-Rokitansky-KusterHauser syndrome, a rare condition that affects one in 5,000 women.

Those with MRKH have an underdeveloped womb or it is missing but their ovaries are intact, and produce eggs and female hormones, making it possible for them to conceive via fertility therapy.

North London couple Grace and Angus first had treatment to create seven embryos which were then frozen, before she received the transplant from her sister Amy Purdie in two overlapping surgeries that lasted almost 18 hours.

Several months later, one of those stored embryos was transferred via IVF to Grace.

Baby Amy was born on February 27, several weeks early and weighing 4.5lb, following a planned caesarean section to ensure a safe, hospital-based delivery.

Grace said: "She came out crying and we were a bit worried she would be whisked off to an antenatal ward, but she's been with us every minute of her life so we're so grateful for that."

She went on: "Having waited such a long time, it's kind of odd getting your head around that this is the moment where you are going to meet your daughter.
