Don't write Rishi off...he's turning the tide for Tories
Daily Express
|March 30, 2023
UP UNTIL six weeks ago, Rishi Sunak's wooden performances and lacklustre speeches left much to be desired. The polls were against him. The economy was on life support, and his party was mired in so many scandals that I could hardly keep up.
For the moderately centre-right voter who was relieved when the electorate soundly rejected Corbyn's disastrous premiership bid in 2019, it felt like the country had taken a turn for the worse. Even the likes of Boris Johnson lost favour with the party's base long before he was taken down by cake and office booze.
All the while, Starmer's Labour Party seemed primed for a resounding electoral victory. Few people in Westminster doubted we were heading for a change in government. After all, isn't 12 years of Conservative leadership enough? How could Labour not win when the Tories recently produced a prime minister who was outlived by a head of lettuce?
However, even with the odds stacked against Rishi Sunak, the tide is slowly beginning to turn. Across polls, Labour's lead is shrinking. The average poll puts Labour's lead at just under 20 points. And it's easy to see why.
To Rishi Sunak's credit, the last remnants of the Brexit question have been put to rest. For a party deeply divided over this issue, Sunak was able to pass his Brexit deal through with a small rebellion - a rather considerable achievement.
For many of us, the Windsor Framework, as it is known, couldn't come soon enough. Now, the country can move forward with trade deals and investments to resuscitate our anaemic economy.
