Critics won't take rebrand lion down

GOLDEN syrup maker Lyle's is in a sticky situation after axing its historic label - and facing a meltdown from critics.

The distinctive golden syrup logo of a dead lion being swarmed by bees with the biblical quotation, "Out of the strong came forth sweetness" is the world's oldest unchanged brand packaging, launched in 1883.

But the logo has now been given a revamp featuring a friendly-looking lion and a single bee. Opponents claimed the move was an attempt to appease youthful trend setters, who might be offended by the Christian nature of the branding.
