Asthma raises risk of diabetes and vice versa

Scientists urge preventative measures

PEOPLE with asthma are more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes, while those with the latter are also twice as likely to develop the respiratory condition, a study has found.

The mechanisms that link the two "remain unclear", say researchers who suggest preventative measures, such as considering screening those with asthma for pre-diabetes.

Academics in Taiwan reviewed existing data, analysing 17 million people from 14 studies conducted in the UK, Finland, Denmark, US, Korea, Singapore, China and Israel.
