Airport faces charges over polluting river

ENVIRONMENTAL regulators have brought criminal charges against an airport accused of polluting a river with de-icer.

East Midlands airport, near Derby, has been blamed for causing damage to the River Trent and nearby Diseworth Brook.

Derby Railway Angling Club has campaigned for years, concerned at the river's worsening ecology.

Club spokesman Gary Cyster said: "I'm sure many people wouldn't associate an airport with river pollution.

"But I have seen first-hand, over a long period, how a failure to properly treat water contaminated with chemicals sprayed on planes and runways in cold weather can seriously damage the ecology of local streams and rivers.
