THE National Trust has received the biggest single donation in its 131-year history - a £10million pledge from a multimillionaire philanthropist.

£10m gift to National Trust

Trust head Hilary McGrady, Stourhead in Wiltshire and philanthropist Humphrey Battcock

Director-general Hilary McGrady described the gift from venture capitalist Humphrey Battcock as a “huge boost”.

Among its priorities are the restoration of nature and rewilding at its sites, continuing moves towards net zero and the release of beavers.

There will also be more seats for visitors in its stately homes. The mega-donation is unrestricted, meaning the charity can spend it as it likes.

Mr Battcock said: “The National Trust represents what is best about our society, preserving our shared heritage for all the people.

“For over 130 years, it has been at the vanguard of progress for the UK.
