A day filled with fun as community enjoys annual Fig Pie Wakes

- WORDS AND PICTURES BY JONATHAN WHITE

WYBUNBURY was alive with tradition, laughter and community pride as the 30th annual Wybunbury Fig Pie Wakes rolled into town once again.

Organised by the Wybunbury Tower Preservation Trust, this much-loved event drew thousands of visitors to the village near Nantwich for a day steeped in heritage and fun.

Dating back over two centuries, the Fig Pie Wakes was brought back to life in 1995 to support the preservation of Wybunbury’s iconic leaning tower. Since then, the event has become a cherished annual fixture with proceeds from stalls helping to support local charities and village groups.

At the heart of the day was the traditional fig pie rolling competition where contestants rolled homemade pies crafted from a historic recipe - down Main Road from The Swan Inn, testing their skill (and perhaps a bit of luck) to see how far their pies could travel.
