Winter break-ins at Muizenberg Beach huts

In the early hours of Saturday, a couple from Rocklands, Mitchell's Plain, reportedly broke into one of the huts after unsuccessfully trying to force open another.

According to Angela Gorman, chair of the Friends of the Muizenberg Huts, the pair smashed a door and lock before finding one they could break through.

They were discovered the next morning sleeping beneath a plastic sheet.

A case was then opened at Muizenberg SAPS.

“They had a backpack with them, which police later found to contain a large knife and drugs,” Gorman said.

“The woman claimed a private security guard at The Empire had told them they could sleep in the huts.”

Protect workers against crooked contractors

WASTE management workers in Cape Town have once again been left in the lurch by contractors who pay low wages and steal from them by half-paying them, delaying paying them, or not paying them at all, enabled by the City of Cape Town's policy of outsourcing services, even in cases where such services are part of the City’s core functions.
