Unfulfilled promises: Ramaphosa’s accountability crisis

PRESIDENT Cyril Ramaphosa faces criticism over his failure to implement the National Anti-Corruption Advisory Council (Nacac) core recommendation to establish an independent Office of Advisory Integrity (OPI).

The civil society coalitions, spearheaded by the Civil Society Working Group on State Capture (CSWG), said this is despite Ramaphosa’s promise that the government would finalise its approach to setting a permanent anti-corruption body during his 2026 State of the Nation Address (Sona).

The coalition, of more than 20 civil society organisations, was established in November 2018 to ensure accountability for economic crimes, advocate against the looting of public funds, and engage with the Zondo Commission.

Key members include the Helen Suzman Foundation, Freedom Under Law, Corruption Watch, Section27 and the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, among others.

Nacac was mandated to Ramaphosa on the implementation of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS), strengthen integrity architecture and shape the comprehensive state response to the Zondo Commission.
