Taxi violence is all too familiar for fearful commuters

TEN people killed in five days. That is the grim toll of the most recent flareup in Cape Town’ taxi conflict, and behind every statistic is a grieving family, a commuter too afraid to board a taxi, a community trapped by violence that has become far too familiar.

The provincial government has moved to close key routes linked to Codeta for six weeks. The decision may bring temporary calm, but it punishes commuters who rely on these routes to get to work and school. For the poor, who already carry the greatest weight of broken systems, this will cut even deeper.
