COMMUNITY members serving on Cape Town's police oversight committee may soon see their compensation soar to over three times their current pay for attending a monthly meeting.

However, this substantial increase hinges on approval from the city council.

The proposal, which was presented at the mayoral committee meeting on Tuesday, has sparked considerable debate.

Yet, in a surprising move, Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis returned the report for further consideration, leaving many to speculate about the reasons behind this decision.

According to the report, each of the nine civil society members serving on the Civilian Oversight Committee, or Civoc, should receive R7,200 for preparing for and attending the get-together. They are currently paid R1 866.16 per meeting.

The chairperson’s allowance for that same meeting could jump from R2 486.40 to R8 500. Two councillors who serve on the committee, bringing its total membership to 12, do not receive any allowance for these meetings.
