Corruption, neglect led to Zimbabwe healthcare system's downfall

THE president of Zimbabwe must step down. In Zimbabwe a growing crisis is unfolding, one that reflects a deep failure of governance and accountability. Despite billions of dollars allocated over the years to improve public services, the country's health system is deteriorating at an alarming rate.

Hospitals lack basic medicines, healthcare workers are underpaid and overworked, and citizens are left to suffer or die from treatable illnesses. Yet, in stark contrast, reports of widespread corruption and mismanagement of public funds have become commonplace.

Zimbabwe's public health sector, once considered one of the best in sub-Saharan Africa, is now on the verge of collapse. Most hospitals and clinics are severely underfunded. Essential drugs like insulin, antibiotics and antiretrovirals are often unavailable. Operating theatres function without adequate equipment and, in some cases, without electricity or running water.

Patients are asked to bring their own bandages, gloves, or even candles.
