RESTRICTIONS COULD BE EXTENDED TO SOLVE ISSUES ON CITY STREETS

- By HANNAH BROWN Local democracy reporter

PARKING restrictions along some Cambridge streets could be extended to tackle the issue of problem parking that is leaving people “stuck in their houses”.

Cambridgeshire County Council has proposed to extend parking restrictions in Paradise Street, Grafton Street and John Street.

The streets currently include parking bays for permit holders and single yellow lines that restrict parking between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday.

Changes proposed could see the extension of the single yellow line restrictions to also include Sunday to tackle “obstructive” parking.

The county council report said: “The obstructive parking in question involves drivers opting to park on the footways, so as to not obstruct vehicular traffic on the road, at the expense of pedestrian use of the footways.

“This is forcing pedestrians, including parents with prams and those that require mobility aids, into the road or to have to cross the road where visibility of and for them is obscured by the same parked vehicles. It is also obstructing residents’ access to and from their properties, again residents are reporting issues with exiting/entering their properties with prams, bikes and mobility aids.”
