MORE THAN 80 GUIDED WALKS FOR ALL AGES AND ABILITIES AS FOREST MARKS 30 YEARS OF TRANSFORMATION

- By JOSEPH RICHARDS joseph.richards@reachplc.com

PEOPLE are invited to explore the wonderful landscape of the National Forest as part of this year’s walking festival.

Now in its 16th year, the National Forest Walking Festival returns from May 16 to 26, offering more than 80 guided walks for all ages, abilities and interests.

From short, accessible trails to more challenging countryside treks, the programme includes themed walks focusing on wildlife, history, geology, and wellbeing - all through 200 square miles of woodland, farmland and regenerated landscapes that make up the National Forest.

This year, as the forest celebrates 30 years of transformation, the festival invites you to explore the landscape one footpath at a time.

A special highlight is the 30th Birthday Walk, on Thursday, May 22. (walk no.66).

This 11-mile circular will take you through 10 native woodlands planted in the National Forest's early years.

Starting at Sence Valley Forest Park (LE67 6NW, What3Words: behind.goose.spouse), the walk will pass through wildlife reserves, farmland and villages, with a lunch stop at the historic 1620s Manor House in Donington le Heath.

The walk is challenging, with six stiles and an estimated six-hour duration.
