BURTON Albion may have added their Ryan Sweeney replacement with the signing of Toby Sibbick from Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee.

- By COLSTON CRAWFORD

The 6ft 2in Sibbick is mainly seen as a centre-half but has played right-back for Wigan as well.

He has arrived on a two-year deal with the option of a third and the deal was expected, supporters having spotted him among the players watching Tuesday night's friendly away at Chesterfield.

At 26, he is a good age and is a player manager Gary Bowyer has had an eye on.

“Firstly, a big thank you to our owners for the support in getting Toby in and to Wigan for their help in getting the deal done;” said Bowyer.

“I have followed Toby's career closely, I saw him playing for Hearts when I was managing Dundee and have always loved how he plays.

“He will add physicality to our back line with his size and pace and his ability to defend duels will help with how we want to play this year.

“We look forward to working with him and I have loved the connection that we have made through our conversations in the lead up to him signing.”

Unusually, for an English-born player, Sibbick plays internationally for Uganda, where his mother was born, having won one cap in March last year in a 2-2 draw with Ghana.
