VEHICLE breakdowns caused by potholes increased by nearly one-fifth in 12 months, new figures indicate.

Breakdowns caused by potholes up 20%

Some 9,439 callouts as a result of poor road surfaces in the UK were received by the RAC between January and March, a 19% increase from 7,904 during the same period last year.

Common vehicle problems include damaged shock absorbers, broken suspension springs and distorted wheels.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has previously said councils should “get on with the job” of repairing potholes, which are caused when water freezes and expands after entering cracks in road surfaces.
