A cut above your average chip shop

If you reckon you've seen it all before when it comes to fish and chip shops, then maybe it's time to think again, says SOPHIE GRUBB

- SOPHIE GRUBB

NOT so long ago, a tenner would have paid for enough fish and chips to feed a small family. Last year, however, the Office for National Statistics revealed that the average price of one portion had risen £9.88 - a price that's likely to go up even more, according to warnings this week.

You might be able to find cheaper in Bristol, but the best places are bound to charge a premium to cover the cost of quality ingredients. On first glance at the menu, that's the case at Fisk & Frite in St Werburghs.

This is not your average neighbourhood fish bar, as is clear upon entry. Most chippy takeaways that I know have clinical lighting, bland white walls and ugly flooring with dubious-looking stains.

Here, there are tables with floral arrangements and trendy seats, and the ceiling is covered with string lighting, hanging baskets and tiny hot air balloon ornaments.
